Start with the “WHY.” A treatment plan makes more sense after the pattern, scalp, routine, and health history are considered together.
THIS ISN’T JUST
A HAIRCUT ISSUE.

Hair and beard concerns can be connected to what is happening on the skin, inside the body, and in everyday life.

WHAT MEN ARE SEEING
Common concerns.
Different possible roots.
Two men can have similar-looking thinning for completely different reasons. Copying somebody else’s routine can waste time—or make irritation worse.
01
Thinning & recession
A changing hairline, crown thinning, or excess shedding may relate to genetics, hormone sensitivity, inflammation, stress, nutrition, medication, or illness.
02
Scalp discomfort
Flakes, itching, tenderness, buildup, or recurring irritation can disrupt the scalp environment and lead to scratching, breakage, and avoidable damage.
03
Patchy beard growth
Uneven growth may reflect genetics, grooming damage, skin conditions, inflammation, or alopecia. More oil is not always the answer—the cause matters.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
“Hair loss” is not one diagnosis.

Male-pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, traction, breakage, and stress-related shedding can require different next steps. Sudden loss, smooth bald patches, pain, sores, bleeding, or rapidly worsening symptoms should be evaluated by an appropriate licensed medical professional.
ALOPECIA IS NOT JUST A WOMEN’S ISSUE

A quick guide to
men’s hair loss patterns.
Alopecia simply means hair loss. It can affect men and boys of every age, race, and hair texture. The shape of the loss gives clues, but a pattern alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.
Some forms are nonscarring, meaning the follicles remain alive and regrowth may be possible. Others are scarring, meaning inflammation destroys follicles and delay can make the loss permanent.
01
Male-pattern hair loss
Usually develops gradually with a receding hairline, thinning temples, or a widening spot at the crown. Genetics and sensitivity to DHT are major drivers. Early medical treatment may slow loss and help some men retain or regrow hair.
04
Traction & grooming-related loss
Repeated pulling from tight braids, locs, ponytails, glued units, or heavy extensions can damage follicles. Harsh brushing, chemicals, heat, and close shaving can also create breakage or inflammation. Early traction loss may improve; long-term scarring may not.
02
Alopecia areata
An autoimmune condition that often causes sudden, smooth round or oval patches on the scalp or beard. It can begin at any age and affects every race. A dermatologist should confirm it and discuss treatment.
05
Scarring alopecia
Inflammation can permanently destroy follicles. CCCA often begins at the crown and is seen most often in Black women, but men can develop CCCA and other scarring conditions such as folliculitis decalvans or dissecting cellulitis. Burning, pain, bumps, drainage, or a shiny smooth scalp need prompt dermatology care.
03
Telogen effluvium
More shedding than usual can appear a few months after major stress, fever, surgery, rapid weight change, poor nutrition, medication changes, or illness. Hair often improves after the trigger is corrected, but the cause should be investigated.
06
Breakage—not follicle loss
Tightly curled hair can snap close to the scalp from dryness, friction, chemicals, heat, or rough grooming and look like thinning. Uneven short hairs suggest breakage; a smooth empty patch, missing follicle openings, or spreading loss suggests something deeper.

WHAT COSMETIC PRODUCTS CANNOT DO
Cosmetic products cannot diagnose, medically treat, or cure autoimmune alopecia, infection, DHT-driven hair loss, active scarring disease, or follicles that have been permanently destroyed. Start with a trichology consultation: a trichologist can assess the visible hair and scalp, review relevant history and routines, recommend supportive care, and refer you to a dermatologist or physician when medical diagnosis or treatment is needed.

MEN OF COLOR: WHAT MAY LOOK OR BEHAVE DIFFERENTLY
Texture, skin response, grooming—and unequal access to early diagnosis—all matter.

Coiled hair is more vulnerable to dryness and breakage at bends in the strand. Curved follicles also make ingrown hairs and razor bumps more likely after very close shaving. Darker skin may develop more noticeable discoloration or raised scars after inflammation.
Do not let crown loss, tenderness, burning, pustules, heavy scaling, drainage, or a smooth shiny patch get dismissed as ordinary balding. Men of African descent can also develop inflammatory and scarring alopecias that require a dermatologist—not just a new oil or haircut.
Get medical help promptly: sudden or rapidly spreading loss; pain, burning, pus, bleeding, open sores, thick scale, or drainage; loss of eyebrows or body hair; a shiny scalp with missing follicle openings; or hair loss in a child. Early care can protect follicles that are still alive.
CARE THROUGH EVERY STAGE
The concern may change with age, but the first move stays the same: notice the pattern, understand the possible causes, and act before guessing becomes a routine.
Hair health has no age limit.
Teens & young adults
Unexpected shedding, flakes, sports sweat, tight styles, early recession, and the beginning of beard care deserve attention—not teasing or silence.
20s–30s
Hairline changes, crown thinning, stress shedding, grooming damage, ingrown hairs, and patchy beard growth often become easier to spot.
40s–50s
Progressive loss can overlap with health changes, medications, inflammation, greying, dryness, and years of accumulated grooming habits.
60+
The focus may shift toward preserving existing hair, supporting delicate skin, reducing discomfort, and maintaining a dignified, realistic routine.
For clients under 18: a parent or legal guardian must arrange and participate in consultation services. Children with sudden loss, painful symptoms, sores, or rapidly changing patches should be evaluated by an appropriate licensed medical professional.
THE WHOLE PICTURE
What affects the hair
rarely stays in one lane.
Stress
Long-term stress may shift more follicles into a shedding phase and can worsen sleep, habits, and inflammation.
Health
Thyroid concerns, autoimmune conditions, illness, medications, and nutrient deficiencies can sometimes show up through hair or scalp changes.
Grooming
Close shaving, dull clippers, harsh cleansers, tight styles, heat, and picking can irritate skin or weaken tightly curled hair.
Consistency
Healthy routines take time. Cleansing, moisturizing, protection, and follow-through matter more than chasing every viral product.
THE QUICK BEARD CRASH COURSE
Beard problems can look alike while having very different causes. Start by separating a growth pattern from breakage, skin irritation, infection, or true hair loss.
Patchy, breaking,
dry—or actually losing hair?
01
Common causes
Genetics and natural density, alopecia areata, inflammation, ingrown hairs, fungal or bacterial conditions, eczema, medication, illness, nutrient deficiency, and repeated grooming trauma can all play a role.
02
Breakage & bare-looking spots
Coarse, tightly curled beard hair can snap from dryness, harsh shampoo, heat, friction, over-combing, picking, or aggressive brushing. Short uneven hairs suggest breakage; smooth round patches or sudden loss need professional evaluation.
03
Smoking & drinking
Smoking exposes tissues to oxidative stress and reduces healthy circulation and healing. Heavy alcohol use can worsen dehydration, sleep, inflammation, and nutrition. These habits may aggravate a beard or skin problem, but they are not the only possible cause.
04
Can it be reversed?
Breakage, dryness, irritation, and some nonscarring loss may improve when the cause is removed and follicles remain active. Genetics may limit density. Scarring loss and destroyed follicles may not regrow; alopecia and infections need medical diagnosis and treatment.
THE QUICK BEARD CRASH COURSE
Cleanse. Soften. Protect. Track.
-
Clean the beard and skin regularly with a gentle cleanser; do not scrub aggressively.
-
Condition and moisturize the hair and skin beneath it while damp.
-
Detangle gently, trim split ends, disinfect tools, and stop picking ingrown hairs.
-
Photograph suspicious spots monthly and seek help if they spread, hurt, scale, drain, or become smooth and bald.

THE LOYA17Y PRODUCT STANDARD
Loya17y Cosmetics keeps its formulas intentional, naturally based, and transparent—without loading them with unnecessary extras.
What we leave out matters, too.
01
Nut-conscious formulation
Formulated without nut-based ingredients. Always review the complete ingredient list and contact Loya17y before use if you have a serious allergy.
02
Non-comedogenic
Thoughtfully formulated to avoid clogging pores when used as directed.
03
No harsh additives
No harsh chemicals, artificial dyes, added coloring, or added fragrance.
04
Naturally limited shelf life
Because these are naturally based products, shelf life is naturally limited. Follow the product label, storage directions, and use-by guidance; discard any product that changes unexpectedly in smell, color, or texture.
Good to know: “Natural” and “nut-conscious” do not guarantee that every product is suitable for every allergy or sensitivity. Patch test first and review each product’s ingredient label.

CAN IT BE SAVED?
Honest answers before promises.
Some shedding, breakage, and scalp-related concerns may improve when the cause is identified and addressed early. Permanently scarred follicles or advanced loss may not regrow. A proper assessment helps determine whether the goal should be recovery, preservation, comfort, or medical referral.
